Galatians (IVP New Testament Commentary Series)
Published in Hardcover by Intervarsity Press (July, 1994)
Authors: G. Walter Hansen, D. Stuart Briscoe, Haddon Robinson, and Grant R. Osborne
Average review score:

Great
This book is fearless and readable. It takes on some difficult theological issues without being strident. You come away with an appreciation of Paul's ferver in protecting the early church from the effects of racial and national elitism. There is no hesitation in saying that the law is temporal and that the Spirit is the force for a Christian's moral direction. Christians overcome their sin through faith in what God has accomplished through Christ's death, burial, and resurection.

God's Great News for Children
Published in Hardcover by Focus on the Family Pub (June, 2002)
Authors: Rick Osborne and Marnie Wooding
Average review score:

Engaging and Colorful
This book tells Biblical stories in a way that engages children through sights, sounds, and smells, to imagine what a day in the life of Jesus or John the Baptist or another Biblical person would be like. It's cartoon-ish and colorful illustrations are pleasant and the interactive endings encourage children to think about and respond to what they learn. On a recent visit with close friends, my three-year-old son and their four-year-old daughter asked for this book every night before bed.

Hardy Roses: A Practical Guide to Varieties and Techniques (Revised Edition)
Published in Hardcover by Key Porter Books (01 May, 2001)
Authors: Robert Osborne and Beth Powning
Average review score:

A Grand New Edition of a Classic
The solid cultural information, beautiful photographs, and evocative descriptions made Hardy Roses: An Organic Guide to Growing Frost-and Disease-Resistant Varieties (c. 1991) my favorite rose book.

Now this classic is available in a revised edition, now called Hardy Roses: A Practical Guide to Varieties and Techniques (2001). Though the sub-title has changed, the updated and expanded chapters on propagating and nurturing roses and dealing with insects and diseases remain solidly in the organic camp.

34 new roses have been added to the heart of the book which includes descriptions and photographs of roses which have done well in the author's Canadian nursery.

There are also two other features. There is an updated list of 200 varieties of hardy roses and also an appendix listing nurseries, rose organizations and source books (no Internet addresses, alas!)

This book complements Jerry Olson's Growing Roses in Cold Climates. I like having both.

Should a rose fancier who already has the first edition buy the second? There is nothing wrong with the first edition (it is less expensive and still available) but for me, I wanted those 34 new roses! I'm glad I went ahead with this purchase.

The Hidden Fury
Published in Hardcover by Thomas Bouregy & Co (December, 1983)
Author: Juanita Tyree Osborne
Average review score:

The Hidden Fury has it all.
The Hidden Fury written by Juanita Tyree Osborne was a project of mine. I was reading it purely for seeing if it was appropriate to sell to children and what range of reading age it was. I could not put it down. It had adventure, romance, and suspense! It had it all. I loved it. And I hope others will enjoy it as I have.

Authors: Nancy I. Sanders, Susan Titus Osborn, Julie Durrell, and Susan Titus Osborne
Average review score:

My son loves this series - and he's only 5
This series wonderfully puts Jesus' parables in language the kids can understand. We read these books to my kindergarten son and he is riveted. Then my 3rd grade son takes them to read himself! They are labeled a 2nd grade reading level but have a wide range of interest!

The High Frontier: Exploring the Tropical Rainforest Canopy
Published in Paperback by Harvard Univ Pr (March, 1994)
Authors: Mark W. Moffett and Edward Osborne Wilson
Average review score:

solid science, unforgettable images
This is a great popular science book, written by an adventurer/explorer who also has a Harvard PhD in biology. He travels all over the world for National Geographic, taking nature photos as well as reporting on cutting-edge discoveries in the rainforests. As such, he succeeds at mixing art and science in this book, which is somewhat technical, but explained in clear language that laymen can understand. THis book changed the way I saw rainforests: fully 9/10s of their biota are in the canopy, in the leaves high above, which you would never from the ground. And Moffet went up there with camera to photograph it with some of the world's best scientists. The result is masterful.

It is truly a pity that this book is out of print. I wrote a review of it for the Boston Globe when it came out and later met the author, Moffet. He was as interesting and colorful as the book, full of hilarious stories of his adventures.
